Uke Can Sing is a series of fun and educational workshops, free and open to the public, that gather people outdoors in a Toronto park and teach them how to sing and play the ukulele. The workshops are led by K Funk and Lady Ree, the infamous singing ukulele ladies of the TTC Subway Musicians program. Kristin Fung and Sheree Spencer are both professional musicians, performing artists and certified teachers resident in Toronto with more than ten years of career experience. By the end of each 1.5 workshop, individuals will have learned how to play and sing a full song on the ukulele. Up to 30 ukuleles are loaned to participants free of charge for use during each 1.5 hour workshop so that the events are accessible to people from social or economic circumstances who would otherwise not be able to attend. (Workshop participants may also bring their own ukuleles.) Neighbours and passersby are encouraged to sit, watch, sing, and listen to the delightful and magical experience of 30 ukuleles being played at once! After the workshop, K Funk and Lady Ree will bang out some fan favorites and welcome participants to strum along.
